Player Carolyn Walters Selected as
MCCC Woman Athlete of the Year

West Windsor,
N.J. -- MCCC sophomore soccer player Carolyn Walters, of Hamilton,
was selected by Mercer County Community College as Woman of the
Year for the Garden State Athletic Conference's 24th annual celebration
of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, held at Seton Hall University
on Feb. 7. This yearly event recognizes an outstanding female athlete
from each New Jersey community college and four-year school. The
event included a luncheon and an awards ceremony during halftime
of the Seton Hall women's basketball game versus St. John's Univeristy.
According to Walters' coach, Jodie Ricciardi, she was selected because
of her leadership both on and off the field. "Carolyn was always
the player her teammates could count on when we needed one more
goal or we needed someone to work extra hard at practice to motivate
the other players," Ricciardi said.
Twice named "Athlete of the Week" during the fall season,
Walters scored 14 goals and had nine assists. She proved a versatile
player who excelled at both forward and midfield.

Walters
credits athletics with keeping her on track. "Playing a sport takes
a lot of time. It forces you to balance," she said. "It gives
you motivation and teaches you how to manage your schedule."
She
notes that her experience with her teammates was great. "We had so
much fun this season. We were friends off the field too. The chemistry
was there and that improves your play as a team." She adds that the
players were truly to committed to improving their game. "We worked
hard in practice. We were dedicated to it."
A graduate of Nottingham High School, where she also played soccer, Walters
is a Liberal Arts major who will continue her studies at Mercer for several
more semesters.
