West Windsor,
N.J. -- The men's and women's basketball teams are looking strong
as they head into the Region 19 Tournament, which starts next week.
According to MCCC Athletics Director John Simone, both teams have
clinched first place in the Garden State Athletic Conference, a
dual mark of achievement that hasn't been reached in years.
The men's team, whose record was 10-11 after the winter break, has
exploded with a seven-game winning streak. Since the beginning of
February, the Vikings have beaten Raritan, Ocean, Burlington and
Del Tech, bringing their record to 17-11 as of Feb. 16. MCCC Athletics
Director John Simone attributes their success in part to student
retention. "We have retained all 12 players on the roster from
the fall to the spring semesters," Simone said, "which
means they are doing the work in the classroom in addition to solid
play on the court."
Key contributors include shooting guard Uros Kovacevic (15 ppg),
who leads the team in scoring and assists, forwards Isaiah Andrews
(11.3 ppg) and Paco Boussougou (12.6 ppg), and guards Quincy Hendrix
(12.6 ppg), Derek Williams and Quentin Loftin.
The Lady Vikes have had their own seven-game winning streak, with
victories over Raritan, Ocean, Burlington, Del Tech (in overtime),
and Morris since the start of February. Numerous players in the
starting line-up have added to the point total including forwards
Alexis Sweet (20.8 ppg), Azaria Crews (13 ppg), and 6-foot sophomore
Samantha Foley (12.6 ppg). Also making significant contributions
are forward Marelys Williams and guards Samantha Cobbs, Showana
Paul, Laurie Regan, and Ja'Neice Worley.
Both teams face tough make-up games with Harcum on Feb. 18. But
win or lose, the Vikings will still be in excellent position as
they enter the post-season.
