MCCC Basketball Teams Hoping to Peak in February

2/3/10

West Windsor, N.J. - As they head toward the postseason, the best sign for the Mercer County Community College basketball teams may be that each head coach believes his team's best game is still ahead.

There are plenty of big opportunities in February, including the Region 19 Tournament, which is on the horizon in the final week of the month.

One opportunity arrives Saturday, Feb. 6 when MCCC hosts an important men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Region 19 rival Harcum College.

"We're rounding into form. We've played some real good games," says women's basketball coach Mike Tenaglia, whose team enters the week with a 14-7 record as well as two wins over club-level Salem County College.

"It is some sort of milestone to get back over .500, but I don't think this is an 11-loss team," adds men's basketball coach Howard Levy, whose team, at 12-11, has matched its win total of his rookie season last winter. "We've climbed back. We're playing pretty well."

Harcum's men's squad will arrive at Mercer with a wealth of Division I talent and a no. 3 national ranking, while Harcum's women's squad is unbeaten in Region 19 competition. Obviously, the Vikings squads will need to have their best efforts if they are going to avenge early season losses to Harcum.

The MCCC men enter the week with wins in six of their last eight games, including an impressive 63-60 triumph over Region 19 power Lackawanna Junior College. Shooting guard Uros Kovacevic (Montenegro), who is drawing interest from Division I schools, leads the team in scoring and assists. There's an excellent supporting cast, including guard Quincy Hendrix (Hamilton, N.J.), forward Isaiah Andrews (Florence, N.J.) and double-double machine Paco Boussougou, all of whom are scoring in double figures.

The Lady Vikings are undefeated at home with well-rounded play from key members of the starting front line-up of freshmen, Alexis Sweet (Trenton, N.J.) and Azaria Crews (Ewing, N.J.), and 6-foot sophomore Samantha Foley (Hamilton, N.J.).
